A REMARKABLE fighting spirit has emerged from the depths of the Beaconsfield mine disaster in northern Tasmania, as the stricken men battle the odds with humour and bravery.
Brant Webb and Todd Russell are now wearing dry clothes, can move more freely, have lights and are able to read magazines as rescuers scramble to free them from their underground hell.
They have been joking with rescuers and making unusual requests, including for the Saturday newspaper so Mr Russell can look for a new job.
"They are hoping to be out on Saturday so they can play football," Tasmanian Medical Retrieval Service director Andrew Hughes said.
