It was an interesting story.

Here, guns are a part of life. Children get them as gifts at a young age, and while you HOPE they are also given some intense lessons on gun safety, sadly they aren't.

My father spent countless hours with my sister and myself teaching us most importantly respect for the firearm and then on to how to shoot.

The greatest lesson he taught us in the terms of self defense was don't pull the gun out unless you intend to use it without hesitation.

I lived alone with a small child and my younger sister drove back and forth from college almost every weekend. She happened to get her gun before I got mine and was madly racing in to Houston to catch a flight to Los Angeles to see her boyfriend. Well, as luck would have it, she got caught in one of our famously horrendous summer downpours which delayed her arrival at the airport and placed her in jeopardy of missing her flight. In her haste, she had forgotten to remove the gun from her bag and the loose ammunition, passed the gun thru the machine at the security checkpoint and got herself arrested.

She spent the night in the city jail, bless her, trying her best to keep away from the crackheads, nut jobs and prostitutes. We managed to get her out, after her 'inprocessing' had taken place, six hours later.

When she went to trial, (yes, TRIAL) it turns out that our family lawyer, the prosecuting attorney and the judge were all church buddies. Our family attorney said, "Judge, I have known this family for forty years, she is a good girl, simply made a terrible mistake and is deeply remorseful for it. Can't we see a simple solution for this?"

Judgement, deferred adjudication. Which translates to, keep your nose clean for six months, attend your probation and it'll not reflect as a felony on your record.

Some time later, she has moved on from that boyfriend and was dating her now husband. He happened to be a Houston Police Officer. On their second date he looks over at her and says very sweetly, "Sooo..I dont' suppose I'm going to get to hear about this felony weapons charge, am I?"
She looked back at him with great shock that he had actually checked her record and replied, "Not if you want there to be a third date"

They are married now, almost seven years.
