What was I?

The 'What am I' was a Cobblers Anvil. This was given to me by my Dad (who was not a cobbler, but used it to repair shoes and resole them when we were younger), my sister has one too, which she uses all the time (er, she's not a cobbler either).
Sue

Letter to a friend

Lee,

I am so sorry to hear the news that your Dad passed away so suddenly.
What a shock for you and your family. So sad.

I am speaking to you now, as a daughter, a wife, and a mother.

You are entering a softer, sadder time in you life, where you have the human privilege of ‘seeing off your father’; the duty of a daughter; and the responsibility of a mother.

The duty of a wife is a given… :)

No doubt you are madly helping organise the funeral. A huge ask! Again, a wonderful job, but one fraught with responsibility. Did he want his? Did he want that? Why didn’t we discuss it more!

All this, and supporting your Mother too, a task, which you shall not only rise to, but excel in.

I don’t know you very well, but I do know you love your family, blue jeans, and your ‘boys’. I feel you are a ‘hands on’, ‘can do’ person.

Make the time to stop also, and just be… allow yourself time to grieve, to think, to ponder, to wonder. Allow yourself time to just do what-ever-the-hell-you-want-to-do!

Listen to music. Have a drink. God is watching, and she approves! There has never been a sunny day without a shadow!

Have a box of tissues handy at the funeral, and don’t be afraid to visit it often.

Ask a friend to take photos at the funeral. You may never want to see them again, but if you do…they are always there to revisit.

Talk as much as you like about your Dad, to whomever will listen. Be happy. Be angry. Be daring! Be still.

It’s a funny thing this stuff being us…. it’s ultimately OUR life too, and we have the choice to live it in the way we want to, according to the time/date/fashion. There are no rules/codes/protocol for grieving … so laugh, scream, cry, hold, dream and remember.

Remember your Dad when he held you as a little girl. Remember him when he used to whisper in your ear, or pushed you on a swing.

What you are about to go through (funeral etc) is so difficult, but it’s do-able. Don’t be strong for anyone (unless it’s your Mum!) just go with the flow.

Remember to eat! Remember to drink and toast a great life! Remember to look at your family, and hug them and hold them and tell them that you love them dearly.

Thinking of you.

Patty

Daughter. Wife. Mother. Parent. Friend.

Tom had been in the liquor business for 25 years. Finally sick of the
stress, he quits his job and buys 50 acres of land in Alaska as far from
humanity as possible. He sees the postman once a week and gets
groceries once a month. Otherwise it's total peace and quiet. After six
months or so of almost total isolation, someone knocks on his door. He
opens it and sees a huge, bearded man standing there.

Name's Lars, your neighbor from forty miles up the road. ....Having a
Christmas party Friday night... Thought you might like to come. About
5:00."

"Great", says Tom, "after six months out here I'm ready to meet some
local folks. Thank you."

As Lars is leaving, he stops. "Gotta warn you...There's gonna be some
drinkin'."

"Not a problem" says Tom. "After 25 years in the business, I can drink
with the best of 'em."

Again, the big man starts to leave and stops. "More 'n' likely, gonna be
some fightin' too."

"Well, I get along with people, I'll be all right. I'll be there.
"Thanks again."

"More'n likely be some wild sex, too."

"Now that's really not a problem" says Tom, warming to the idea.
"I've been all alone for six months! I'll definitely be there. By the
way, what should I wear?"

"Whatever you want. Just gonna be the two of us."

In Flanders Fields

In May 1915 Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps was working in a dressing station on the front line to the north of Ieper, Belgium, when he wrote In Flanders Fields:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In 1918 Moira Michael, an American, wrote a poem in reply, We shall keep the faith, in which she promised to wear a poppy 'in honour of our dead' and so began the tradition of wearing a poppy in remembrance.

It was French YMCA Secretary, Madame Guerin, who in 1918 conceived the idea of selling silk poppies to help needy soldiers.

Poppies were first sold in England on Armistice Day in 1921 by members of the British Legion to raise money for those who had been incapacitated by the war.

The practice began in Australia the same year, promoted by the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia (now known as the Returned & Services League of Australia - or RSL).

In the lead-up to 11 November each year, the RSL sells red poppies for Australians to pin on their lapels, with proceeds helping the organisation undertake welfare work.

Since 1921 wearing a poppy has enabled Australians to show they have not forgotten the more than 102 000 Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars and conflicts during the past 100 years.

Hi, This is where I work, we were there this evening to get milk on our way home from Reading. Eight pm on a dark cold Autumn evening.

Love is....

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca- age 8

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." Billy - age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." Karl - age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." Chrissy -age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." Danny - age 7

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss" Emily - age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate," Nikka - age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday." Noelle - age 7

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy - age 6

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore." Cindy - age 8

"My mommy loves me more than anybody .. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." Clare - age 6

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken." Elaine - age 5

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford." Chris - age 7

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." Mary Ann - age 4

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." Lauren - age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (what an imagination) Karen - age 7

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross." Mark - age 6

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget." Jessica - age 8

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about this caring child.

It was a four year old child whose next door neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry"

When there is nothing left but love, that is when you find out that love Is all you need.

What a special day tommorow, never before has a Prime Minister been sacked. Love you Gough, what a charasmatic, intelligent mind you have.

Flying rules

THE 25 RULES OF FLYING

1. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.

2. If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back, then they get bigger again.

3. Flying isn´t dangerous. Crashing is what´s dangerous.

4. It´s always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.

5. The ONLY time you have too much fuel is when you´re on fire.

6. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep The pilot cool. When it
stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.

7. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No one has ever collided With the sky.

8. A ´good´ landing is one from which you can walk away. A ´great´ landing is one after which they can use the plane again.

9. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won´t live long enough to make all of them yourself.

10. You know you´ve landed with the wheels up if it takes full power to taxi to the ramp.

11. The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle Of arrival. Large angle of arrival, small probability of survival and vice versa.

12. In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.

13. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment.

14. It´s always a good idea to keep the pointy end going forward as much as possible

15. Remember, gravity is not just a good idea. It´s the law. And it´s not subject to appeal.

16. Keep looking around. There´s always something you´ve missed.

17. The three most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you, and a tenth of a second ago.

18. Helicopters can´t fly; they´re just so ugly the earth repels them.

19. Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn´t get to Five minutes earlier.

20. Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds.

21. Always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the Number of take offs you´ve made.

22. There are three simple rules for making a smooth landing. Unfortunately no one knows what they are.

23. You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

24. If all you can see out of the window is ground that´s going round and round and all you can hear is commotion coming from the passenger compartment, things are not at all as they should be.

AND FINALLY,

25. When in doubt, take AMTRAK. They may crash more, but they don´t have to fall before they do!

Paul had an important meeting, but just could not find a place to park. Finally, he resorted to prayer. "Lord, have mercy. If you find me a parking space, I'll go to church every Sunday for the rest of my life. I'll even give up drinking!"

Miraculously, a car pulled out, right in front of him.

Paul looked up and said, "Never mind. I found one."

Uploading images on Hello to Blogger

This is the resxponse to my email for help...thought you might be intersted. You should be able to Blog normallynow. Fingers crossed.

"Hello,

Thank you for contacting Picasa customer support.

The problems you experienced with Blogger were due to temporary service issues where new CAPTCHA security was added in an effort to stem "splog" (spam blog) abuse.

If you are using Hello or BlogThis!, try immediately entering a new post caption and then press the Publish button. If the CAPTCHA error appears again, wait a few moments, then enter the caption again and press Publish. In most cases, the followup attempt(s) will succeed without having to log into Blogger.com to resolve the CAPTCHA manually.

It's important to know that if you are prompted to solve the CAPTCHA, it doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with your blog. Because of the number of variables our classifier uses, there's no easy way for us to pinpoint why your blog may have tripped the word verification (publicizing this information also serves to defeat the classifier).

The number of false positives will affect only a small percentage of the overall Blogger community. However, we know that for those of you asked to answer the word verification that this is a true inconvenience and for that we apologize.

We will be continually improving the classifier to reduce the number of false positives. We're also working on ways so that once a blog with word verification has been established as legitimate, the blogger will no longer need to solve the CAPTCHA.

It's important that we find ways to put reasonable barriers in place to further prevent the automated creation of spam content. This is not just to prevent the contamination of search indexes with spammy search results, but to ensure the quality of Blogger's service for everyone."
